The earth contains within it animating energies or forces. These earth spirits await our evocation. If we call them forth, they will be of help to us. A true and virtuous friend is the mode of being possessed by the earth spirits toward mortals. This virtuous friendship is, of course, realized only if the mortal properly understands just how it is that mortals and earth spirits may be understood as being truly good and alike in virtue.
